After reading Success Built to Last by Jerry Porras, Stewart Emery, and Mark Thompson, I, Chanelle Carver, founder of LnP, began to wonder, how will I create a life that matters? What can I do to make society a better place? Not just for my neighbors or strangers from another state but my fellow human, perhaps countries and continents away.
Little did I know the social enterprise idea I’d been working on would be just the big break this world needed.
At Babson College, I enrolled in a Human Rights course which changed my views of society and of life itself. Professor Goldberg gave two options: take a final exam or complete an activist project. Being the person I am, adventurous and stubborn at times, I choose activism.
There was no need to talk about how the world needed to change anymore because I was now able to do it. To make change the way I envisioned it, real change. Social Change.
In December 2006, I sought the help of professors, students, and organizations alike who shared my vision for a better world. I shared my vision with them and in return, they offered support. I believe that all adults should have access to a decent education and the resources, skills and experiences they need to succeed. The concept for an organization that could do all I had dreamed was still new but the premise was not. It was at that moment, I founded Literacy ‘n’ Poverty Project, an organization that is committed to supporting adults and the organizations that serve them, both domestic and international.
In October 2007, we launched our first website, published a blog, and outreached to the community. People were talking, volunteers wanted to work with us, and organizations inquired about partnerships. Our supporter base was growing and everything seemed just right.
Not long after that did I realize this initiative had such great potential, and in order to transition out of the startup phase, serious changes were needed. It’ll be a challenge but together, and only together, can we make this happen!
